Release Your Inner Wonder Woman!
By Laura Schreffler
What will you do to show off your inner warrior?
Wonder Woman seems to be cropping up everywhere these days. From a line of products by M.A.C. cosmetics to a new NBC TV series by Ally McBeal creator David E. Kelley, the ass-kicking Amazonian queen has been newly re-crowned the universe’s ‘It’ girl. And why shouldn’t she be?
Wonder Woman stands for everything that embraces womanhood. She’s sexy, tough fair and loving — and she has super powers! She has superhuman strength, speed, stamina and agility. She can talk to animals (kind of like my friend Saryn, who, ironically, runs WonderWall. Coincidence? I think not). Plus, she’s got killer accessories that aren’t just pretty to look at, but are functional, too. She has a Lasso of Truth, which forces people to be honest, her infamous indestructible bracelets, a missile tiara and an invisible airplane. Oh yeah, and she has really, really good hair.
When you think about it, we are all Wonder Women. Whether you’re standing up to your bitchy boss, letting go of the love of your life or bravely moving on when you think you just can’t go on, you’re being brave. You’re being tough. You may not own boots that can kill a man, but I’m sure you’ve perfected a glare that can stop him in his tracks and, at the very least, make him flinch.
I’m being my own Wonder Woman at the moment by taking a trip to my number one dream destination – Australia – alone. Just because friends can’t go and I don’t have a boyfriend to take in the sights of Sydney or swim in the Great Barrier Reef with doesn’t mean that I should give up on my dreams. This is my time, my journey, my destination — my time to be wonderful, by myself.
Let’s forget about the TV series right now, because, although it stars Adrienne Paliciki, an actress I love, Hollywood has a way of killing/glossing over something that should be real and raw, and talk about M.A.C.‘s new line instead, as it’s something I can actually stand behind and support. The concept is actually pretty ingenious: wear these products and you, too, will feel like a Wonder Woman. As screen goddess Sophia Loren once said, “Sex appeal is fifty percent what you’ve got and fifty percent what people think you’ve got.” And what’s wrong with fooling yourself into believing you’ve got “it”?
My point is this: do whatever you have to do to feel empowered, to feel fierce. Whether it be embarking on a personal journey, applying some killer cosmetics or simply by wearing some really tall red boots, don’t be afraid to live your life. Who knows what will happen when you let you inner Wonder Woman out of hiding? The possibilities are endless… but you can bet that you’ll be happy that you took a chance on yourself.
