How NOT To Date: Admit You’re A Murderer
A dating show contestant confessed to killing his ex-wife and a mistress….on air
Modern-day dating is slightly terrifying to me. Meeting men online and through Tinder is the norm, but how can you ever really know who you’re meeting? Case in (very) extreme point: a man looking for love on a Turkish dating show revealed to the audience – and to his potential new girlfriends – that he had murdered not one, but two women that he had once loved. I guess the only good thing you can say about this (and calling this “good” is the equivalent of calling Brad Pitt “attractive”) is is that he was upfront about how undesirable he is, while most women only discover how awful their partner is over time.
The man in question, 62-year-old Sefer Calinak, shocked the audience of Flash TV’s The Luck of The Draw by admitting — on air — that he had murdered his first wife and later killed a lover with an axe during an argument.
OK, Calinak was never going to be appropriate true marriage material. His first wife – at the age of 17 – was his cousin. A cousin whom he killed that same year. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison, serving only four years of his term before being released due to an amnesty.
He then had an affair with a married woman who refused to leave her husband, and he became so enraged at this that he “accidentally” killed her with an axe. Then it was back to prison for Calinak for a measly six years.
Strangely, he never had much luck in love, which is why he thought, “Ah, the hell with it!” and went searching for love, in true Bachelor-style, on the small screen.
In the States, these contestants usually have to undergo a background check (although they can sometimes pass the rigorous check like mentally unstable and now-deceased former Bachelor contestant Gia Allemand), but on this Turkish show, at least, the producer actually knew that Calinak had murdered someone, but deemed him a fit choice because he had served his sentence. Um, so not someone I’d want as my matchmaker.
In addition to this being a totally insane story, it really just serves a point that I’m constantly and consistently stressing, which is be safe. Yeah, this guy did women a favor (apart from his exes, obviously) by being up front about his craziness, but most do not. Most men are charming and pithy, especially over the Internet, and only let their crazy out over time.
Yes, modern dating is fun. It’s interesting and innovative, and many of the sites claim they protect your privacy and vet their users, but there is always the potential that someone can slip through the cracks. Play smart, be happy and stay safe.
