Spirit Guides

A skeptic’s experience with Spirit Guides

By Sheila Heylin

When I first heard about Spirit Guides, I was a bit skeptical. Practicing what I preach, I had to not judge, keep my mind open and at the very least, listen to what is placed in front of me. I did just that. As I prepared for Andrea’s interview I was reading the steps to get in touch with your guides. I read the part about testing your guides and asking them to show you something like a flower (a red rose), or a pumpkin while not in season, etc.

Out of season pumpkin

As I looked around my home, I noticed a flower arrangement a friend had brought me the night before. It was a mixed bouquet with a single red rose in it. So I said “Okay Guides, show me a red rose, but that one doesn’t count.”

Is your spirit guide sign right in front of you?

As soon as I asked to see it my Catholic guilt hit like a bolt of lightning. Faith, I should just have faith. Telling my Guides, “it’s okay, you don’t have to show me anything.” I felt bad testing them. I felt, in a way, that I was being rude, ungrateful. Then I thought, If I could believe in Guardian Angels, whose to say that which I was taught to count on and cherish, wasn’t now being introduced again to me in the form of a Spirit Guide. Why doubt? Even still, I said to my Guides, “Don’t worry about it, I have faith. I know you know what I need.”

Well, days went by and no red rose. I was everywhere red roses should be. I said to my Guides, “Really? Nothing. I thought you’d show me anyway.” Again, I felt bad and said, “No, it’s okay, I don’t need proof.”

A few days later one of my favorite aunts suddenly passed. Her spirit was bigger than life. And so was how she loved! I knew how strong her spirit would be in the afterlife. Riding home from her wake, praying for strength for the family, I thought of my Guides. It’s amazing how fast we go there in times of need.
I realized I didn’t notice one red rose! That’s impossible at a funeral home. Maybe I just wasn’t aware because of the circumstances. I didn’t think of it again until we were at the grave site.

The funeral director had a basket full of white and pink roses that he was getting ready to pass out to us all. All of a sudden I looked around at all of the flower arrangements and not one red rose! How could that be? I said to my Spirit Guides, “REALLY!? Come on, not one little red rose?” Did I mention my beautiful Aunt happened to have been a florist? I looked up to the sky and said,”Thea (Greek for aunt) please, tell them, I do want a sign!

As they passed out the pink and white roses to everyone I made peace with the fact that it wasn’t going to be today. As the funeral director approached me, I watched him grab through the pink and white roses and pull out a short stemmed red rose! To say I was shocked and overwhelmed with love and gratitude is an understatement. As the tears rolled down my face, I can’t describe the warmth that moved through me. I looked around in amazement and wanted to share this moment, “see, look a red rose,” and then I realized, I already had shared that… thank you, my beautiful Thea Maria. And thank you, my Spirt Guides!

I still believe that they already know what I want but it’s up to me.

Who doesn’t need help? Who doesn’t want that knowing, that there is always something there to surround you and help you through?

Why not get to know what has already helped us out? The times we thought of it as “luck” or “coincidence” or “can you believe it?” help.

Whether you believe it or not, that’s up to you…

I like believing we have this love and light around us that connects with the love and light inside us all!

Andrea says to start small. It was the small things that made my day better. Running late and asking the Guides to give me a parking spot or on a stormy day to stop the rain just for a minute so my dog Gracie (who hates the rain) can go out. They came through.

At first these things seemed trivial but it’s where we take it to that matters. There’s no harm in giving it a try.

I’d like to thank Andrea for opening me up to this. You are a great example of happiness and light!!!

Cheers to all our Guides!!!
