Body Types ‘Round The World: What Looks Make Men In Different Countries Happy

By Laura Schreffler

Can you imagine how boring the world would be if we all looked alike? In my imagination, it would look like a super prepped out boarding school where, in addition to wearing the same uniform, we were all wearing the same face. No, thanks. Although I am flawed, I’m happy with who I am. I am grateful to be unique. And somewhere around the world, there’s a country of fine young gentlemen who would agree that a 5’1, athletic-bodied Italian-German (I, like most Americans, prefer to cite my ancestral roots) is their cup of tea. But where? What are guys looking for?

Before you discover who guys around the globe are attracted to via a study done by Shape magazine, I need to say this, and I’m sorry if it comes across as cheesy. You need to believe that you are beautiful. How many of us are actually born looking like Angelina Jolie? Exactly: just Angelina Jolie. And you know, some men don’t even find her attractive.

We can’t predict that the guy we think is hot is going to feel the same way about us — we can only hope that he does. And if he doesn’t, chalk it up as his loss and move on. Knowing where to look may make this particular battle that might easier to fight, but please remember – there is someone in the world for everyone. Somewhere in the world, there’s a guy that’s going to love you for you, regardless of whether or not you have a few extra wrinkles, a bit of cellulite, or are carrying a few extra pounds. As long as you’re happy with and confident about who you are, how could a guy not fall in love with you?

“In South Africa, it’s sexy to have a well-defined body. Because we get warm weather more than half the year, we spend a lot of time outdoors, and sport is important. Since we start playing from a young age, women are very athletic looking. I’m particularly a fan of the toned legs.” — Andrew, 31

“Japanese men are known for liking someone you would classify cute, as opposed to sexy or hot. They want a petite woman who is slim and flat-chested. It’s not difficult to find, because Japan has one of the lowest obesity rates in the world so being overweight is not common and considered unhealthy.” – Yuzuru, 31

“Originally men preferred women on the rounder side—almost fat looking, but still in proportion. Now, the trend is more of your average body shape. Oprah is a good example; she’s rounder, but has a feminine touch. We don’t want a woman with no meat on her bones, but we also prefer she not be XXL.” –Diamil, 45

Think: Oprah Winfrey

“In Bogota, men prefer classic looking women with thin bodies. But if you go to the coast, guys like girls who are very fit and have big fake boobs. It’s common for girls to get plastic surgery at age 15 or 16. Women want it because that’s what men want. I don’t. I’m from Bogota.” –Pedro, 26

“In the Middle East, a woman’s body is just for her husband. Men typically like bigger-sized women. Someone with a full face, or what we call round like the moon. If you are skinny, it means you are not healthy and we don’t appreciate a woman who goes to extremes on either end of the scale.” –Basam, 34

Think: Catherine Zeta-Jones

“A lot of women in the Caribbean are considered sexy if they’re shaped like a cola bottle. We like flat stomachs and lean bodies, but we love wide hips and a definite curvature in the rear. It’s not just about the shape of the body, but how you move it especially when we dance.“ –Alan, 23

Think: Rihanna

“Guys like the skinny look, but don’t care if the girl is toned, so women don’t put an importance on working out. It’s sad because they’ll skip a meal or smoke to achieve the look. I don’t agree with this trend. I’d rather a curvy girl over one who is skinny and not concerned with being in shape.” – Pedro, 30

Think: Kate Bosworth

“The belief is that all women are tall, thin and blonde, but those are models working abroad. Men here think a woman is sexy if she is“compact fit,” meaning everything is in proportion. We wouldn’t go for a petite woman with a big butt or a bigger girl with small boobs.” – Victor, 27

Think: Jennifer Aniston
