This Breast Cancer Survivor Exercise Program has been developed for women to do after surgery and before they get back to their regular workouts. This is all about what women need to do before starting back to their old exercise routines or beginning a new exercise program. If they start back too soon before they have their full range of motion in any plane, they can do damage that is not reversible.

About 1 in 8 women in the United States (12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2010, an estimated 207,090 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 54,010 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer. After breast cancer surgery some woman may experience loss in the range of movement in their shoulders on the affected side, due to scar tissue and adhesions. Some breast cancer surgery patients could also be at risk for lymphedema- swelling can occur in the arm of the affected side due to damage to the lymph vessels in the armpit area caused by  either the removal of the axillary lymph nodes or from radiation to the area or a sentinel node biopsy.

Some patients are aware of these issues after breast cancer surgery and others are not. Step 3 is videos of everyday stretches to help elevate tightness in the chest and shoulders. Step 4 is flexibility and stretching videos to help work on any limitations found in the self assessment.
